Artist Opportunity: $100 to Participate

October 6, 2010

Hi there!I wanted to spread the word to my artist friends. . .

Artist Opportunity: $100 to Participate in Evaluation Project
Blair | October 6, 2010 at 3:45 pm | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/p3Kty-aY

The Assets for Artists program is recruiting Berkshire County artists in all disciplines to participate in a survey and evaluation investigating the economic impact of our work. If you’re a “low- to moderate-income” artist in the Berkshires (and if you have NOT enrolled in the Assets for Artists matched savings program), you can receive a $100 stipend to share information on your household income, credit history, housing circumstances, and workspace needs. It should take about 20 minutes of your time to complete the survey and send off the documents. Participation in the study does not prevent you from possibly enrolling in the Assets for Artists program in the future, and all information will be kept strictly confidential and used only for evaluation purposes.

The study is intended to help the program partners better understand the financial conditions of local artists and evaluate the relative impact of the training and matched savings grants provided through Assets for Artists, now in its third year of operation with an innovative model to promote the financial success of working artists.

Eligibility for the study is based on household income: a four-person household with adjusted gross income of no more than $65,000 (as documented on a federal tax return) will be eligible. Income limits are lower for smaller households.

Artists in any discipline who would like to discuss eligiblity for the study should contact Blair Benjamin at MASS MoCA (413-664-4481 x8104 or blair). The deadline is October 22, 2010 to submit your information, and slots are first-come first-serve, so don’t delay. And please share this information with other artists who might be eligible to help us strengthen the Assets for Artists program in the future.

Vikki True’s “French Twist” Cabaret

September 28, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
VIKKI TRUE TO PERFORM BENEFIT JAZZ CABARET FOR BAK
Great Barrington MA

Veteran Jazz vocalist Vikki True takes a fresh new turn in an upcoming benefit concert at the Berkshire Art Kitchen on October 9th.  French Twist, True’s all new cabaret will feature songs by Jacques Brell and Michele LeGrande as well as other composers from the period.  True has been working on designing this performance with David Case, one of her voice students, and the show promises to be an exciting departure from the repertoire Vikki True has been performing in the Berkshires of late.

The vocalist approached BAK director, Gabrielle Senza last spring to discuss the idea.  “One thing I REALLY want to do is another benefit for BAK and the work and education going on there” she states.  “I hadn’t asked for a date until now because I really didn’t know what I might want to do. Not the same things I do in clubs and not what I do in churches or temples – I’ve been making my life journey with singing and music as the lens through which I “see” the world.  A necessary semi-transparent cocoon, but one from which I’m struggling to metamorphose.”
“The thing I’ve been most excited about the last few years” True continues, “is the voice work I do with my private students, so what I proposed to Gabrielle is that David Case and I do a performance – a cabaret, if you will, for the benefit of BAK AND for our own enjoyment.  David worked with me in a cabaret class about a year and a half ago and started private lessons last winter. I got inspired at one of the lesson in the spring as we were working on some great stuff and began talking about Jacques Brell and Michele LeGrande. I LOVE these composers and have only been able to do them a bit over the years. Now I’m excited about performing again!”

Recognized for her powerful presence and voice, Vikki has performed folk, gospel, blues, rhythm and blues and jazz, though jazz is her greatest love.  She has shared the stage with Pete Seeger, and Rory Block and has opened for America and Josh White, Jr.  As a jazz vocalist she has appeared with Tommy Newsom, Eddie Harris, Groove Holmes, Michelle Hendricks, Arni Lawrence and Johnny Lytle.  She has opened for Spyro Gyra, Joanne Brakeen, Taj Mahal and Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson.

Her festival appearances include: The Kool Jazz Festival, Women In Jazz Festival, and The Derby Jazz Festival as well as The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and the Norwalk Folk Festival with her gospel group, The Sweet Sisters of Mercy, with whom she has released 2 CDs.
Her jazz CD, ’bout time was released in 2002 and True is currently working on another.  She performs jazz and cabaret around the country, leads workshops for CATA (Community Access to the Arts) and does benefits in her community to support the Rape Crisis Center, Women’s Health services, Hospice Care among others.  She was a featured performer in the Soul-Stirring Women in Music benefit event at BAK in 2009 for the Walk Unafraid Anti-Violence Project, an innovative program developed by Gabrielle Senza to help empower, educate and heal communities that are actively working to prevent abuse.

French Twist will start at 8pm on Saturday, October 9 at the Berkshire Art Kitchen (BAK).  BAK is an alternative art space dedicated to offering unique opportunities for creativity, connection and change.  BAK is located at 400 Main Street, Great Barrington and open by appointment and good fortune through the winter and spring.  Tickets are available online at www.BerkshireArtKitchen.com or by calling 413.717.0031

Women As Heroes :: Paintings & Monoprints by Harriette Joffe

Women As Heroes
Tales of Magic & Adventure

Paintings & Monoprints
by Harriette Joffe

August 1- September 30, 2010

Stop by Thursday through Sunday (or by appointment) to see Harriette Joffe’s show before the end of the month.  You won’t want to miss it!  Call 413.717.0031 for hours.

The Berkshire Art Kitchen is pleased to announce the opening of Women as Heroes: Tales of Magic & Adventure, featuring paintings and monoprints by Santa Fe artist, Harriette Joffe.

Harriette Joffe’s work is classically drawn, influenced by the Renaissance and through personal connections with artists of the New York Abstract Expressionist School. The subjects of Joffe’s extensive collection of paintings and monoprints include women as heroes and driving forces from all ages and from around the world.

Rose Slivka of the East Hampton Star writes, “Joffe’s orgiastic narratives of nudes and horses seem to explode out of the private incarnations of the painter possessed by her myth. Joffe is the compulsive seeker and seer – a naked witch, a sorceress, an enchantress – taking satyr and stallion alike in an earth union that makes ritual sing its story over and over again.”

She created a suite of work around the myths and history of the Queen of Sheba, likely the first woman to create a multi-million dollar trade arrangement.  Her “Palio” collection of monoprints and solarplate etchings portrays a complex and ritualistic event that has taken place in Siena, Italy since the twelfth century with the Madonna as the Patron Saint of the festival sometimes called “Race of the Soul.”

Albuquerque’s Journal North writes, “Englishman William Blake {a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age}, who is another Joffe kindred spirit, sought after the spiritual heroism and heavenly aspirations of humanity. Joffe occupies the vast middle ground between vice and virtue.”

The exhibit includes work not shown before in the northeast, including a new series of abstract works inspired by the river near the artist’s home in the Berkshires.  Join us for a reception with the artist on Sunday, August 1 from 3:00 – 6:00 pm.  Ms. Joffe will present a brief artist’s Talk at 5:00 pm.  Refreshments will be served.
