The Berkshire Art Kitchen invites the community to come hear Beverly Naidus, author of Arts for Change, a provocative, personal look at the motivations and challenges of teaching socially engaged arts. Naidus will offer candid examination of her own university teaching career, weaving in broader social and historical perspectives. By sharing stories examples of socially engaged art that inspired her curriculum, Naidus is sure to stimulate new thinking among artists, educators and activists of all kinds. She offers inspiration to anyone with an inkling of the role arts can play in responding to critical issues of the day.
Arts for Change addresses vital questions that students and educators have long been asking: How can art be part of a movement for social change?
How can art resolve conflicts, heal trauma, wake up those who are numb and in denial, and envision a new world? Arts for Change intersperses scholarly concerns with intimate, image-rich metaphor in a free-spirited, non-academic prose. The stories of 33 dynamic, contemporary artist/teachers working both inside academia and within community settings also offer inspiration to the reader.
Signed copies of Arts for Change will be available for purchase for $14.95 following Naidus’ presentation. For those interested in reading the book prior to the event, it is available through the New Village Press website, www.newvillagepress.net. Let them know you will be attending the program so they can Priority Mail the book.
